In the beginning– By the end of the first formal Canterbury season in the 1950’s, every Canterbury singer was asked for a contribution, never as a condition for singing, but as a hoped-for demonstration of understanding of the complex and expensive demands of the choir. In addition, contributions were solicited from non-singers, whose names were then listed in programs and the occasional informal letters and Canterbury newsletters through which conductor Charlie Walker communicated with the increasingly large group of Canterbury followers. During concerts, which for many years described themselves as “services of music” somewhat similar in structure to a worship service, there was a pause in the performance for the offering. A text in the program usually accompanied the announcement of this pause. Today– Contributions are welcomed from friends, businesses, and foundations to support the choral society, and tax deductible donations give the opportunity to support the Canterbury Choral Society and promote their products or services to both members and concert goers. For more information, please contact us at canterburychoral@gmail.com. While individual donors have always formed the core of Canterbury’s financial support, we are especially grateful to our long-time foundation supporters, The Ernst C. Stiefel Foundation and the Vidda Foundation. Personal Sponsorship |
